That’s a separate job for a separate component: the particulate filter, DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) on diesels or GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) on direct-injection petrol engines. Both work on the same basic principle, and both share the same fundamental problem: they have to periodically burn off what they trap, at a temperature ordinary city driving frequently never reaches.

A ceramic maze that forces exhaust through its own walls

Inside the filter’s metal canister sits a honeycomb ceramic substrate, but with a crucial difference from a catalytic converter’s open-channel design: a particulate filter’s channels are alternately plugged at opposite ends, forcing every molecule of exhaust gas to pass sideways through the microscopically porous ceramic walls between one channel and the next, rather than flowing straight through. That wall-flow geometry is what actually traps the soot — particles too large to fit through the pores get physically stuck on the wall surface as the gas itself squeezes past — and it’s also exactly why a badly clogged filter chokes an engine’s breathing and hurts fuel economy: the more soot builds up on those walls, the harder the engine has to work to push exhaust through the shrinking gaps.

Passive regeneration: burning soot off almost for free

Soot itself doesn’t ignite until well over 550°C, a temperature ordinary diesel exhaust essentially never reaches on its own; ordinary tailpipe temperatures on a diesel typically sit between 200°C and 400°C depending on load. The filter’s catalytic coating solves that mismatch chemically rather than thermally: it promotes a reaction between the trapped soot and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the exhaust stream that burns the soot away continuously at those same everyday 200-400°C temperatures, no dramatic heat spike required. This passive regeneration happens constantly and invisibly during any drive with enough sustained load and exhaust flow — motorway cruising being the textbook case — which is exactly why a car that only ever does short, low-speed urban trips struggles: there’s rarely enough sustained exhaust flow for passive regeneration to keep pace with how much soot is accumulating.

Active regeneration: the ECU deliberately makes things hotter

When the engine control unit’s soot-load model (calculated from pressure sensors either side of the filter, cross-checked against mileage and driving pattern) decides passive regeneration isn’t keeping up, it triggers active regeneration: injecting extra fuel late in the combustion cycle, after the point where it would normally contribute to power, specifically to raise exhaust temperature into the 550-650°C range where the trapped soot itself finally ignites and burns away directly, unassisted by any chemical shortcut. This is the process a driver actually notices — a slightly rougher idle, a warm or unusual smell, sometimes a dashboard message explicitly asking for a sustained period of higher-speed driving — and it’s also the single most common source of DPF-related breakdowns: a car that only ever does short trips can get stuck perpetually starting an active regeneration cycle and then being switched off again before it completes, building up ever more soot with every incomplete attempt, until the filter clogs badly enough to trigger a warning light or, in the worst case, needs replacing outright.

DPF and GPF: same principle, different exhaust chemistry

Direct-injection petrol engines — the same GDI technology praised elsewhere in this series for precise fuel dosing — turned out to have an unwelcome side effect: spraying fuel directly into the cylinder, rather than pre-mixing it in the intake manifold, leaves noticeably less time for fuel and air to blend evenly before ignition, which produces measurably more soot particulates than older indirect-injection petrol engines ever did. That’s exactly why GPFs became mandatory across the EU from September 2017 (Euro 6c) on GDI petrol cars, using the identical wall-flow ceramic principle as a DPF. The chemistry is easier to manage on the petrol side, though: petrol exhaust runs hotter than diesel exhaust and petrol engines produce roughly an order of magnitude less soot mass to begin with, so GPFs generally need less aggressive active regeneration and clog far less often in typical use than a diesel DPF does.

The EU research chasing a lower ignition threshold

The 550°C soot-ignition temperature is the real bottleneck behind every DPF headache a driver experiences, and the EU-funded NANDEEC project (“Nano-Fiberous Catalysed Filters for Diesel Exhaust Emission Control”, Horizon 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, coordinated by the University of Birmingham, UK, €195,455, 2015-2017) went directly after that number: developing a nanofibre-structured catalytic coating (using praseodymium and manganese oxides) specifically engineered to ignite trapped soot at a lower temperature than conventional coatings manage, aiming to make passive regeneration effective across more real-world driving, not just sustained motorway cruising. On the gasoline side, the much larger UPGRADE project (“High Efficient Particulate-Free Gasoline Engines”, Horizon 2020, Research and Innovation Action, coordinated by Centro Ricerche Fiat, Italy, €8.12M, 2016-2019) developed GPF technology specifically for the next generation of stoichiometric and lean-burn GDI engines, alongside the injection, boosting and thermal management systems that determine how much particulate matter a GDI engine produces in the first place — tackling the problem from the combustion side as well as the filter side.

Photo: © Car-Shooters

The catalytic converter deals with toxic gases; it was never designed to deal with soot, the microscopic carbon particulates that diesel combustion — and, since roughly a decade ago, direct-injection petrol engines too — produce in genuinely harmful quantities.
