{"id":17596,"date":"2026-09-11T19:11:46","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T17:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/en\/2026\/09\/11\/vehicle-to-grid-v2g-how-it-works\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T19:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T17:11:46","slug":"vehicle-to-grid-v2g-how-it-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/en\/2026\/09\/11\/vehicle-to-grid-v2g-how-it-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Vehicle-to-Grid: How Your Electric Car Could Become a Battery for the Grid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every conversation about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/2026\/08\/05\/la-ricarica-elettrica-ac-dc-e-connettori-come-orientarsi\/\" target=\"_blank\">EV charging<\/a> so far in this series has assumed electricity moves in one direction: from the grid, through a charger, into the car. <strong>Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)<\/strong> asks a different question &mdash; if a car&#8217;s battery can store electricity and a car spends most of its life parked, why can&#8217;t that stored energy flow back out again when the grid, or the house it&#8217;s plugged into, actually needs it more than the car does?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The hardware that makes &#8220;backwards&#8221; possible<\/h2>\n<p>A normal EV charger is built to do exactly one thing well: convert AC grid electricity into the DC a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/2026\/09\/05\/la-batteria-delle-auto-elettriche-come-e-fatta-e-come-invecchia\/\" target=\"_blank\">battery<\/a> can accept, one-way. A V2G-capable setup needs a converter that can run that conversion in reverse just as cleanly, turning the battery&#8217;s stored DC back into grid-synchronised AC on demand &mdash; either inside the car itself (a bidirectional onboard charger) or inside a dedicated bidirectional wallbox that handles the conversion externally. It also needs a communication protocol both the car and the charging point agree on to negotiate exactly when, how much and how fast power should flow in each direction &mdash; the current standard for this is ISO 15118-20, and CHAdeMO-equipped cars (led early by the Nissan Leaf) had a head start here simply because the CHAdeMO connector was designed with bidirectional flow in mind from the outset, well before most CCS Combo hardware caught up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Three letters, three different jobs: V2G, V2H, V2L<\/h2>\n<p><strong>V2G<\/strong> proper feeds power from the car back into the public electricity grid, typically coordinated by an <strong>aggregator<\/strong> &mdash; a company that pools many EVs&#8217; spare battery capacity together and sells that combined flexibility to grid operators as a service, splitting the payment with participating drivers. <strong>V2H (Vehicle-to-Home)<\/strong> is the simpler, already-commercial cousin: the car&#8217;s battery powers the house directly, either topping up during expensive peak-tariff hours or keeping the lights on during a grid outage, without needing to coordinate with anyone outside the property &mdash; Ford&#8217;s F-150 Lightning and several Korean and Japanese EVs already offer this as a marketed feature. <strong>V2L (Vehicle-to-Load)<\/strong> is smaller still: a simple onboard power outlet the battery feeds directly, useful for running tools or camping equipment, with no grid-synchronisation or smart control involved at all. Of the three, only true V2G requires the full negotiation-and-payment infrastructure that makes this topic interesting to grid operators and slow to actually scale.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why the grid actually wants this<\/h2>\n<p>A modern electricity grid has to balance supply and demand within seconds, and that job has gotten structurally harder as wind and solar &mdash; both intermittent, both impossible to simply &#8220;turn up&#8221; when demand spikes &mdash; take a growing share of generation. A fleet of parked EVs, plugged in and V2G-capable, is a distributed battery of genuinely enormous scale sitting mostly idle: even a modest national EV fleet represents storage capacity that would cost billions to build purpose-built at grid scale. Drawing on that capacity for a few minutes or hours during a demand spike, then quietly recharging the cars overnight when demand and prices are both low, is the core economic case for V2G &mdash; it monetises capacity that already exists rather than requiring new grid-scale batteries to be built from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The catch: batteries don&#8217;t like being cycled twice as hard<\/h2>\n<p>Every charge-discharge cycle causes some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/2026\/09\/05\/la-batteria-delle-auto-elettriche-come-e-fatta-e-come-invecchia\/\" target=\"_blank\">battery degradation<\/a>, and V2G by definition adds extra cycles beyond what&#8217;s needed simply to drive the car &mdash; a legitimate concern that slowed early enthusiasm for the technology considerably. In practice, well-designed V2G programmes limit discharge to a narrow band of the battery&#8217;s state of charge, avoid deep discharges and high-power bursts that stress the cells hardest, and compensate drivers specifically for the wear their battery takes on, treating degradation as a cost to be priced into the service rather than an externality to ignore. Manufacturer warranty terms are still catching up to this reality in most markets, and how battery wear from V2G participation gets warrantied is one of the more unresolved practical questions holding back wider rollout.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The EU research building the technology and the market for it<\/h2>\n<p>Bidirectional charging needs both better hardware and a workable business model before it can scale, and two EU-funded projects tackled those two halves of the problem directly. <strong>INCIT-EV<\/strong> (&#8220;Large demonstration of user centric urban and long-range charging solutions to boost an engaging deployment of Electric Vehicles in Europe&#8221;, Horizon 2020, Innovation Action, coordinated by Fundaci&oacute;n CIRCE, Spain, &euro;15.0M EU contribution on a &euro;18.0M total budget, 2020-2024) ran smart bidirectional charging as one of seven real-world use cases across five demonstration sites spanning urban, peri-urban and extra-urban conditions, alongside dynamic wireless charging and superfast charging corridors &mdash; genuinely large-scale, multi-technology validation rather than a single lab prototype. <strong>V2Market<\/strong> (&#8220;Valorising Energy Efficiency and Flexibility at Demand-Side Using Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and Vehicle to Building (V2B) Technology&#8221;, Horizon Europe, Coordination and Support Action, coordinated by Asociaci&oacute;n Ecoserveis, Spain, &euro;2.0M, 2021-2024) tackled the other half of the problem: defining the aggregator business role and the contractual arrangements needed to actually pay EV owners and connect them to grid operators (DSOs and TSOs) and balance-responsible parties &mdash; the market infrastructure V2G needs just as much as it needs the charging hardware itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Photo:<\/b> <i>&copy; Car-Shooters<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every conversation about EV charging so far in this series has assumed electricity moves in one direction: from the grid, through a charger, into the car.
