In reality, every wheel is set to three separate angles, each measured in fractions of a degree, deliberately chosen by the manufacturer and adjustable by a mechanic: <strong>toe<\/strong>, <strong>camber<\/strong> and <strong>caster<\/strong>. None of them is visible to the naked eye, but get any one of them wrong by even half a degree and the result shows up unmistakably &mdash; a car pulling to one side, a steering wheel that won&#8217;t self-centre, or a tyre that wears itself bald on one edge while the rest still looks new.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Toe: which way the wheels actually point, seen from above<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Toe (convergenza)<\/strong> describes whether a pair of wheels, viewed from directly above, point slightly toward each other (<strong>toe-in<\/strong>) or slightly away from each other (<strong>toe-out<\/strong>) rather than running perfectly parallel. It sounds like it should always be set to zero, but it isn&#8217;t: a small amount of toe-in on the front axle is standard on most cars specifically because, once the car is moving and the suspension bushings flex under rolling resistance, that slight toe-in relaxes toward parallel, giving straight-line stability at speed rather than a car that constantly wants to wander. Too much toe error in either direction, though, has the wheels dragging sideways against the direction of travel every moment the car rolls, which is why incorrect toe is the single biggest cause of a very specific, very visible symptom: <strong>feathered tyre wear<\/strong>, where the tread blocks develop a sharp edge on one side and a rounded edge on the other, unmistakable to the touch even when the tread depth still looks fine at a glance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Camber: how far the wheel leans in or out, seen from the front<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Camber (campanatura)<\/strong> describes how far a wheel leans inward or outward at the top when viewed head-on: <strong>negative camber<\/strong> means the top of the wheel leans in toward the car, <strong>positive camber<\/strong> means it leans out. Most road cars run a small amount of negative camber, or close to zero, as a compromise between even tyre wear and cornering grip; performance and track cars run noticeably more negative camber because a tyre actually generates its maximum grip when its contact patch stays as flat and square to the road as possible while the whole car body rolls sideways under cornering load &mdash; a small amount of static negative camber cancels out that body roll and keeps more rubber in contact with the road exactly when it matters most. The trade-off is straight-line tyre wear: too much negative camber and the inside edge of the tyre wears down long before the rest of the tread, which is exactly the visible wear pattern that tells an experienced mechanic camber is off before a gauge ever confirms it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Caster: the angle that makes the steering want to go straight<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Caster (incidenza)<\/strong> is the odd one out of the three: rather than describing the wheel itself, it describes the tilt of the <strong>steering axis<\/strong> &mdash; the imaginary line the wheel actually pivots around when you turn the steering wheel &mdash; when viewed from the side. Positive caster tilts that steering axis backward at the top, the same basic geometry as a supermarket trolley&#8217;s front castors or a bicycle&#8217;s front fork: it&#8217;s precisely what creates the <strong>self-centring effect<\/strong> that pulls the steering wheel back to straight-ahead after you release it out of a turn, and it&#8217;s also what makes a car feel planted and stable in a straight line at motorway speed rather than nervously darting at the smallest steering input. More positive caster generally means heavier, more deliberate steering effort and stronger self-centring; less caster means lighter steering that self-centres less assertively &mdash; part of why steering feel varies so much between a small city car tuned for easy low-speed manoeuvring and a performance saloon tuned for confidence at speed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why all three have to be set together, not one at a time<\/h2>\n<p>These three angles aren&#8217;t independent adjustments a mechanic can tune one after another in any order: changing camber shifts where the tyre&#8217;s contact patch sits relative to the steering axis, which changes the effective toe angle once the car is loaded and rolling, and caster interacts with both because it&#8217;s defined by the same steering axis camber is measured against. That&#8217;s exactly why a proper <strong>four-wheel alignment<\/strong> is done as a single coordinated adjustment on a laser or camera-based alignment rig that measures all three angles on all four wheels simultaneously and relative to each other, rather than eyeballing one angle at a time with a hand gauge the way it was commonly done decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What actually knocks alignment out in the real world<\/h2>\n<p>Alignment doesn&#8217;t drift on its own under normal driving &mdash; it gets knocked out by a specific physical event: hitting a pothole or kerb hard enough to bend a suspension arm or tie rod even slightly, a worn-out bushing or ball joint that lets a component move more than it should, or a collision severe enough to shift the subframe itself.
