A modern car doesn&#8217;t just vent that mixture out the back &mdash; it runs it through a <strong>catalytic converter<\/strong>, a ceramic honeycomb coated in precious metals about the size of a shoebox, which triggers chemical reactions converting most of those pollutants into carbon dioxide, water vapour and nitrogen before the exhaust ever leaves the tailpipe. The chemistry inside it is more precise, and more fragile, than the average driver ever thinks about.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Three reactions, one honeycomb, simultaneously<\/h2>\n<p>A petrol car&#8217;s catalytic converter is technically a <strong>three-way catalyst (TWC)<\/strong>, named for the three reactions it drives at once across a ceramic substrate coated with a thin layer of platinum, palladium and rhodium: it oxidises carbon monoxide into CO2, oxidises unburned hydrocarbons into CO2 and water, and simultaneously reduces NOx back into harmless nitrogen and oxygen. Running an oxidation reaction and a reduction reaction on the same surface at the same time only works within a narrow band of air-fuel ratio around <strong>stoichiometric (lambda = 1)<\/strong> &mdash; exactly enough oxygen to burn the fuel completely, no more, no less &mdash; which is precisely why petrol engines run a closed-loop oxygen sensor constantly trimming fuel injection to hold that ratio, rather than simply running rich or lean for extra power or economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The cold-start problem: most of the damage happens in the first minute<\/h2>\n<p>A catalytic converter does essentially nothing until it reaches its <strong>light-off temperature<\/strong>, typically around 200-300&deg;C &mdash; below that, the catalytic reactions barely happen at all, so a cold engine&#8217;s exhaust passes through largely untreated. Because of this, a disproportionate share of a car&#8217;s total emissions on any given trip &mdash; commonly cited at somewhere around 70-80% &mdash; comes out in the first 60 seconds or so after a cold start, before the catalyst has had time to heat up. Manufacturers fight this with <strong>close-coupled catalyst placement<\/strong> right next to the exhaust manifold rather than further back under the floor, so it heats up as fast as possible from the hottest exhaust gas available, alongside strategies like deliberately retarded ignition timing immediately after startup, which burns less efficiently but pushes hotter exhaust gas toward the catalyst faster.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Diesel plays by different chemistry entirely<\/h2>\n<p>A three-way catalyst only works because petrol engines run at that narrow stoichiometric ratio; diesel engines run permanently <strong>lean<\/strong>, with excess oxygen always present in the exhaust, which makes reducing NOx back to nitrogen chemically far harder &mdash; there&#8217;s too much oxygen around for a straightforward reduction reaction. Diesel aftertreatment is consequently a multi-stage system rather than one component: a <strong>DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst)<\/strong> handles CO and hydrocarbons the same way a TWC&#8217;s oxidation half does, a <strong>DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)<\/strong> physically traps soot particles in a porous ceramic filter and periodically burns them off in a high-temperature &#8220;regeneration&#8221; cycle, and <strong>SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)<\/strong> injects a urea-water solution &mdash; sold at the pump as AdBlue &mdash; into the hot exhaust stream, where it breaks down into ammonia that reacts with NOx across a dedicated catalyst to produce nitrogen and water. Three separate technologies solving three separate problems, all downstream of the same tailpipe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Petrol engines needed their own particulate filter too<\/h2>\n<p>Direct-injection petrol engines, covered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/2026\/09\/05\/iniezione-diretta-common-rail-come-un-motore-dosa-il-carburante\/\" target=\"_blank\">earlier article on direct injection<\/a>, turned out to produce meaningfully more particulate matter than older port-injection petrol engines, because fuel sprayed directly into the cylinder has less time to fully vaporise and mix before ignition. The regulatory response was the <strong>GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter)<\/strong>, essentially the same porous ceramic trap as a diesel DPF adapted for petrol exhaust, now standard equipment on GDI-equipped cars sold in the EU since emissions standards tightened specifically to address this &mdash; a direct, traceable consequence of one engine technology&#8217;s side effect creating demand for another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why catalytic converters keep getting stolen<\/h2>\n<p>Platinum, palladium and rhodium aren&#8217;t just expensive &mdash; they&#8217;re genuinely rare, geographically concentrated in a handful of mines (mostly in South Africa and Russia), and worth, gram for gram, more than gold in the case of rhodium during several recent price spikes. That combination of high value and easy physical access from underneath a parked car has made catalytic converter theft a real, widespread crime, with thieves able to cut one out with a battery-powered saw in under two minutes and sell the recovered precious metals to scrap dealers. It&#8217;s a direct, unglamorous consequence of the same chemistry that makes the converter work in the first place, and it&#8217;s a large part of why researchers are actively trying to reduce or replace the precious metal content described below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The EU research reducing what&#8217;s inside the box<\/h2>\n<p>Three complementary EU-funded H2020 projects tackle different layers of catalytic aftertreatment technology. <strong>REWARD<\/strong> (&#8220;REal World Advanced Technologies foR Diesel Engines&#8221;, coordinated by AVL List in Austria, &euro;9.97M, 2015-2018) developed complete diesel powertrain and aftertreatment technology aimed at going beyond Euro 6 limits specifically under real-world driving conditions, not just the laboratory test cycle. <strong>PARTIAL-PGMs<\/strong> (&#8220;Development of novel, high Performance hybrid TWV\/GPF Automotive afteR treatment systems&#8230; substitution of PGMs and Rare earth materials&#8221;, coordinated by Tinexta Innovation Hub in Italy, &euro;4.65M, 2016-2019) attacked the precious-metal cost and supply problem directly, designing hybrid three-way-catalyst\/GPF systems specifically to cut the platinum-group-metal content described above. <strong>np-Gold<\/strong> (&#8220;Thermally stable nonporous gold for improved automotive catalytic converters&#8221;, an ERC Proof of Concept grant to the Technion in Israel &mdash; an EU Horizon-associated country &mdash; &euro;150,000, 2020-2022) targeted the cold-start problem specifically, developing a thermally stable gold nanoparticle catalyst as a cheaper, more cold-start-active alternative to conventional platinum-group-metal coatings, citing the same 60-second cold-start emissions spike described above as its core motivation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Photo:<\/b> <i>&copy; Car-Shooters<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Raw exhaust straight out of a combustion chamber is genuinely toxic: carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides (NOx), all regulated because all of them are harmful to breathe.
