A <strong>CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)<\/strong> throws that idea out entirely. There are no gears to shift, no discrete ratios at all: instead a belt or chain rides between two cone-shaped pulleys whose effective diameter changes continuously, which means the transmission can, in principle, select literally any ratio between its lowest and highest limit and hold it exactly where the engine is most efficient. It sounds simpler than a geared gearbox. Making it survive real engine torque without slipping or shredding the belt turned out to be the hard part.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Two cones and a belt that can&#8217;t stretch<\/h2>\n<p>The heart of almost every automotive CVT is the <strong>variator<\/strong>: two pulleys, each made of two cone-shaped halves that can be hydraulically squeezed together or spread apart, linked by a belt or chain running in the V-shaped groove between them. Push the halves of the input pulley together and the belt is forced to ride higher up the cone, increasing the effective diameter it wraps around; do the opposite on the output pulley at the same time, and the ratio between them shifts smoothly, with no step at all. Widen the input pulley and narrow the output one and the ratio reverses &mdash; that&#8217;s how the same hardware covers everything from a low &#8220;first gear&#8221; ratio for pulling away to a tall, fuel-sipping ratio at motorway speed, all without a single discrete shift point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why a rubber belt can&#8217;t do the job<\/h2>\n<p>A conventional rubber V-belt would shred almost instantly under the clamping force and torque a car transmission needs, so road-going CVTs use a <strong>steel push belt<\/strong>: hundreds of thin, high-tensile steel bands stacked into a loop, holding together dozens of trapezoidal steel elements that actually push against each other around the pulleys under compression, rather than being pulled in tension like a normal belt. The design was developed by Dutch engineer Hub van Doorne and is still manufactured today by Bosch&#8217;s transmission division under the Van Doorne name licensed to most CVT-using manufacturers. Some CVTs, mostly on higher-torque applications, use a metal <strong>chain<\/strong> instead of a push belt &mdash; narrower and able to handle more torque for a given width, at the cost of slightly more friction loss. Either way, clamping force has to be enormous and constantly, hydraulically managed: squeeze too little and the belt slips and burns through in seconds; squeeze more than necessary and you waste engine power and fuel on friction that didn&#8217;t need to be there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The one thing a variator can&#8217;t do: pull away from a dead stop<\/h2>\n<p>A belt-and-pulley variator can&#8217;t multiply torque the way a stepped gearbox&#8217;s first gear does, and it can&#8217;t do anything useful at zero output speed &mdash; so every CVT needs something else to handle takeoff from a standstill. Most use a <strong>torque converter<\/strong>, exactly like a conventional automatic, sized smaller since it only has to cover the very low end of the speed range before the variator takes over. Others use a wet multi-plate <strong>launch clutch<\/strong> instead, which is lighter and gives a more direct, less &#8220;slushy&#8221; feel off the line but demands more precise electronic control to avoid a jerky or slipping start. Both approaches exist specifically to paper over the one job the variator itself is structurally unable to do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8220;rubber-band effect&#8221; and why Japanese carmakers embraced it anyway<\/h2>\n<p>Because a CVT can hold any ratio it likes, the control software&#8217;s favourite trick under hard acceleration is to snap the engine straight to the RPM of peak power and simply hold it there while road speed climbs &mdash; which is exactly what makes a CVT so efficient at delivering acceleration, and exactly why it earned the nickname <strong>&#8220;rubber-band effect&#8221;<\/strong>: the engine note flares and stays flat and droning while the car keeps gaining speed underneath it, with none of the rising-and-falling rhythm of a stepped gearbox. Drivers used to geared transmissions often read that as the car being slow or the transmission slipping, even when it&#8217;s doing the mechanically optimal thing. It&#8217;s the main reason CVTs have a reputation problem in markets used to manual and DCT gearboxes, even though the technology itself is sound; Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Subaru, all heavy CVT users, have spent two decades tuning software to simulate stepped &#8220;shifts&#8221; purely to make the sensation feel more familiar, at a small efficiency cost.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why it works so well specifically with a hybrid<\/h2>\n<p>A CVT variator pairs unusually well with a hybrid powertrain, which is why Toyota&#8217;s Hybrid Synergy Drive and most other hybrid systems use a variant of it: rather than a belt-and-pulley variator, they typically use a <strong>planetary power-split device<\/strong> &mdash; electronically continuously variable rather than mechanically &mdash; that lets the control software blend engine and electric motor torque and hold the combustion engine at its single most efficient RPM regardless of road speed, exactly the same efficiency logic as a belt CVT but implemented electronically instead of hydraulically. It&#8217;s a different mechanism achieving the same fundamental goal: decoupling engine speed from road speed completely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The EU research pushing CVT torque capacity higher<\/h2>\n<p>Belt-and-pulley CVTs have historically been limited to smaller, lower-torque engines because the steel push belt can only transmit so much force before it slips; that ceiling is exactly what the EU-funded <strong>TRUFUS<\/strong> project (&#8220;MAZARO&#8217;s innovative transmissions for unrivalled electricity and fuel savings in transport&#8221;, Horizon 2020, SME Instrument Phase 2, coordinated by MAZARO NV in Belgium, &euro;2.08M, 2017-2020) set out to raise. MAZARO&#8217;s approach uses a toroidal, disc-based variator geometry rather than a conventional belt-and-pulley design, aiming for a step change in the torque and power density a CVT can handle without the size and weight penalty of scaling up a push-belt unit &mdash; opening the door to CVTs on larger, higher-torque vehicles where stepped automatics and DCTs currently dominate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>So is a CVT actually more efficient?<\/h2>\n<p>In principle, yes: by always running the engine at its most efficient operating point instead of whatever RPM the current gear happens to produce, a well-tuned CVT can beat a stepped automatic on fuel economy, particularly in stop-and-go city driving and in the low, gentle-throttle cruising that dominates WLTP-style test cycles &mdash; part of why CVTs are so common on economy-focused hybrids and compact cars.
