It shuts the engine off the instant the car comes to a stop and fires it back up the moment you lift the clutch or release the brake, and it does that tens of thousands of times over the life of the car without which, on paper, a normal starter and battery would not survive. Making that possible required reinforcing almost every component involved in starting an engine, not just adding a line of software.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>When the ECU decides it&#8217;s actually safe to stop<\/h2>\n<p>The engine doesn&#8217;t just switch off because the car is stationary. Before it commits, the control unit checks a long list of conditions, all at once, several times a second: the driver&#8217;s door and bonnet are closed, the seatbelt is fastened, the battery has enough charge and is warm enough to guarantee a reliable restart, the engine and catalytic converter have reached operating temperature (a cold engine is exempted, both for emissions and for cabin heat), the HVAC system isn&#8217;t demanding heavy cooling or defrosting, the steering wheel isn&#8217;t turned enough to need full power-steering assist, and on a manual car the gearbox is in neutral with the clutch released rather than engaged in gear. Fail any single one of these and the system simply keeps the engine running &mdash; which is why Start&amp;Stop can feel inconsistent from one stop to the next: it isn&#8217;t malfunctioning, it&#8217;s refusing to gamble on a restart it isn&#8217;t confident about.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The starter motor had to stop being a spare part<\/h2>\n<p>A conventional starter motor on a car without Start&amp;Stop is built for maybe 50,000-100,000 lifetime engagements &mdash; effectively cold starts only, a handful a day at most. A car that stops and restarts its engine at every red light and every queue can rack up that same number of cycles in two or three years. Manufacturers responded with <strong>reinforced starters<\/strong> rated for several hundred thousand engagements, using upgraded pinion gears, bearings and brushes designed specifically for high-frequency, warm-engine restarts rather than the occasional cold one. Restart speed matters too: a driver lifting the clutch expects the engine running within a few tenths of a second, not the leisurely crank-and-catch of an old-school cold start.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Belt starter-generators: doing the same job without a separate starter<\/h2>\n<p>More sophisticated implementations skip the traditional pinion-gear starter altogether and use a <strong>belt starter-generator (BSG)<\/strong> &mdash; a beefed-up alternator, mounted on the accessory belt, that can also spin the crankshaft back up to speed on demand. It&#8217;s faster and noticeably quieter than a pinion re-engaging a flywheel ring gear, and because it&#8217;s the same machine that already generates electricity while the engine runs, it&#8217;s a natural stepping stone toward mild-hybrid systems, where that same belt-driven motor also assists acceleration and recovers energy under braking &mdash; the same underlying idea covered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/2026\/09\/05\/la-frenata-rigenerativa-come-unauto-elettrica-recupera-energia-frenando\/\" target=\"_blank\">regenerative braking<\/a> article, just scaled down from a full EV drivetrain to a 48V or 12V assist system bolted onto a combustion engine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why the battery is the part that actually wears out<\/h2>\n<p>The component under the most stress isn&#8217;t the starter, though &mdash; it&#8217;s the battery. A standard flooded lead-acid battery is designed to deliver one big burst of current from a full charge and then be topped straight back up by the alternator; it is not built to survive being repeatedly partially discharged and recharged, which is exactly what happens dozens of times a day in a Start&amp;Stop car, especially with the radio, lights and climate control still drawing power while the engine is off. That&#8217;s why Start&amp;Stop cars almost universally use either an <strong>EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery)<\/strong> or an <strong>AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)<\/strong> battery instead of a plain flooded one: both are built around the same lead-acid chemistry as a conventional car battery &mdash; a different family entirely from the lithium-ion chemistry in an EV traction pack like the one we covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/2026\/09\/05\/la-batteria-delle-auto-elettriche-come-e-fatta-e-come-invecchia\/\" target=\"_blank\">our electric car battery article<\/a> &mdash; but reinforced internally (thicker plates, glass-mat separators soaked in electrolyte for AGM) specifically to tolerate deep, frequent cycling. Fit the wrong battery type to a Start&amp;Stop car and it will fail years earlier than it should, which is the single most common real-world complaint linked to the system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How much fuel does it actually save?<\/h2>\n<p>It depends almost entirely on how you drive. In dense urban traffic with long queues and frequent stops, Start&amp;Stop can meaningfully cut idling time to close to zero, which is exactly the scenario the low-speed phase of the WLTP test cycle is designed to reward; manufacturers typically claim figures in the 3-8% range on the combined cycle, with real-world urban savings often higher. On a motorway journey with few stops, the system barely engages at all, so the saving is close to zero &mdash; which is also why Start&amp;Stop exists in the first place: it was one of the cheapest, fastest levers manufacturers had available to cut fleet-average CO2 in city driving once EU emissions targets tightened, without touching the engine itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The EU research behind the hardware: better batteries and faster energy buffers<\/h2>\n<p>Two EU-funded SME Instrument projects under Horizon 2020 targeted exactly the two hardware bottlenecks described above. <strong>LEFAPO<\/strong> (&#8220;Lead free automotive SLI power&#8221;, 2016-2018, &euro;2.53M) developed a lead-free, non-hazardous replacement for the conventional SLI (Starting-Lighting-Ignition) car battery, explicitly designed to last &#8220;at least six times longer in start-stop life&#8221; than a standard lead-acid battery while tolerating discharge down to 90% depth-of-discharge &mdash; a direct attack on the battery-wear problem described above, from a different chemistry angle than EFB\/AGM. <strong>CAPOWER<\/strong> (&#8220;Advanced material for cost effective and high density ultracapacitors for the transport sector&#8221;, 2016-2018, &euro;1.86M) took the complementary approach: rather than a better battery, a cheaper ultracapacitor material able to charge and discharge fast enough to buffer the sudden current spikes that Start&amp;Stop, regenerative braking and KERS systems all demand, addressing the cost barrier that had kept ultracapacitors out of mainstream road cars despite being technically well suited to exactly this job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Does it actually wear the engine out faster?<\/h2>\n<p>This is the myth that refuses to die, and it made sense twenty years ago: an engine started cold, without full oil pressure yet built up, does see slightly more wear in that first second than one already spinning. But Start&amp;Stop only restarts a warm engine that has just been running, with oil already coating every bearing surface, and the reinforced starters and ECU logic described above exist specifically to make that restart gentle and fast.
