That question is answered by three systems working in sequence &mdash; the <strong>body structure<\/strong>, the <strong>seatbelt<\/strong> and the <strong>airbag<\/strong> &mdash; and understanding how they actually cooperate explains why a modern car survives an impact that would have been fatal thirty years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The structure&#8217;s job: absorb energy, don&#8217;t transmit it<\/h2>\n<p>We&#8217;ve already detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car-shooters.com\/en\/2026\/08\/05\/chassis-and-materials-steel-aluminium-and-carbon-fibre-compared\/\" target=\"_blank\">the <strong>materials<\/strong> a modern body-in-white is built from<\/a> &mdash; but the principle behind their layout is worth restating here, because everything downstream of it depends on it. A crash structure is deliberately built as two zones with opposite jobs. The front and rear <strong>crumple zones<\/strong> are engineered to deform in a controlled, progressive way, converting the car&#8217;s kinetic energy into the work of bending and folding metal rather than passing it through to the occupants. The passenger cell, by contrast, is built to stay as rigid and unchanged in shape as engineering allows, using the high-strength and hot-formed steels covered in that earlier article specifically because they resist deformation rather than absorb it. The result, ideally, is a car that looks badly damaged after a serious crash while the space around the occupants barely changes shape at all &mdash; the structure has done its job before the belt or airbag ever needs to do theirs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The seatbelt: doing most of the actual work<\/h2>\n<p>Once the structure has done what it can, the remaining problem is simple physics: a car that decelerates from 50km\/h to zero in a fraction of a second stops, but an unrestrained occupant inside it keeps moving at 50km\/h until something stops them &mdash; ideally the belt, not the windscreen. A modern <strong>three-point seatbelt<\/strong> is a far more sophisticated device than it looks. A <strong>pretensioner<\/strong>, triggered by the same crash sensors that fire the airbags, yanks the belt taut in the first milliseconds of a collision, removing the slack that would otherwise let an occupant build up speed before the belt engages. A <strong>load limiter<\/strong> then does the opposite job a fraction of a second later: it deliberately lets the belt pay out a controlled amount of webbing under high tension, capping the peak force the belt applies to the chest and ribs, because a belt that restrained an occupant with zero give would prevent forward motion at the cost of the internal injuries that force alone can cause. Getting that trade-off right &mdash; enough restraint to stop the body, not so much that the restraint itself does the damage &mdash; is most of what passive safety engineering actually optimises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The airbag: supplemental, not primary<\/h2>\n<p>Airbags are formally called a <strong>Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)<\/strong> for a reason: they are designed to work with a belted occupant, filling the gap the belt alone cannot close, not to replace it. A frontal airbag needs to inflate and be ready to catch the head and chest within roughly <strong>30 milliseconds<\/strong> of impact &mdash; faster than a person can blink &mdash; which is why it is triggered by an <strong>igniter<\/strong> that burns a solid propellant into gas almost instantly, rather than by any kind of pump or compressed-gas release. A network of <strong>accelerometers<\/strong> around the car reads the shape and severity of the deceleration pulse tens of thousands of times a second, and an algorithm in the airbag control unit decides, based on that pulse shape and on-board occupant classification sensors, not just whether to fire but which of the car&#8217;s airbags to fire and at what intensity &mdash; a full-force frontal deployment on a low-speed impact can itself injure an occupant, particularly a smaller one sitting close to the wheel. Modern cars carry frontal, knee, side (thorax) and curtain airbags as standard, each tuned to a different impact direction and a different part of the body, precisely because a single airbag cannot do all of those jobs at once.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Where the state of the art is heading: EU research on injury reduction<\/h2>\n<p>Passive safety is not a solved problem, and the EU funds active research on exactly where today&#8217;s systems still fall short. One well-documented gap is that both belts and airbags were, for decades, engineered and tested around a single reference body &mdash; roughly 175cm and 78kg, male &mdash; leaving women, children, the elderly and anyone deviating from that average with measurably worse real-world protection from the same hardware. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/894888\" target=\"_blank\">SMART-RCS<\/a><\/strong> (2021-2023, &euro;2.40M, an EIC-funded project bringing a Spanish restraint-technology innovation to market) built a <strong>Personalized Restraint Technology<\/strong> that adapts belt and airbag deployment to the occupant actually sitting in the seat, rather than to the average one the system was designed around.<\/p>\n<p>Two further Horizon Europe projects, both funded under the same 2023 Cluster 5 road-safety call, are tackling the wider injury-reduction question from different angles. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101146652\" target=\"_blank\">IMPROVA<\/a><\/strong> (2024-2028, &euro;4.18M, coordinated by IDIADA, the Spanish automotive testing and engineering group) is building a user-centric understanding of exactly how and why serious injuries occur across all road user types, in support of the EU&#8217;s Vision Zero target of no road deaths by 2050. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101147445\" target=\"_blank\">ProtAct-Us<\/a><\/strong> (2024-2027, &euro;4.00M, coordinated by Virtual Vehicle Research in Austria) runs in parallel, focused specifically on protecting all road user groups &mdash; vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users alike &mdash; from the long-term, chronic consequences of crashes that current safety ratings don&#8217;t fully capture. Together, the three projects point at the same underlying shift: from safety systems tuned to an average body, to ones that adapt to the person actually in danger.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why it matters beyond the crash test rating<\/h2>\n<p>A five-star rating tells you a car performed well against a standardised dummy in a standardised impact &mdash; useful, but not the whole story, since it says little about how that same hardware performs on a body that doesn&#8217;t match the test dummy&#8217;s build.
