The mechanisms it is built from, and the way they work, are in fact completely different from those of a mechanical gearbox. They are more sophisticated, and they deliver strong performance without any input from the driver, who can therefore drive far more comfortably, with no need to think about changing gear according to what the road is doing.
In this type of transmission the clutch and its pedal are absent: in their place there is a torque converter.
Pictured: torque converter – on the left, the schematic drawing. On the right, the actual components. From the top: pump, stator, turbine.

The converter is a hydraulic mechanism made up of three elements, each of them fitted with curved vanes:

The pump P, connected to the crankshaft. Its job is to give the oil flow the thrust and the direction the turbine needs in order to work.

The turbine T, connected to the transmission input shaft. This element is driven precisely by the oil flow directed at it by the pump.

The stator S, connected to the transmission casing through a freewheel, coaxial with the transmission input shaft. Its job is to redirect the fluid coming off the turbine so that it does not obstruct the motion of the pump.

When the engine drives the pump, the pump starts to spin and imparts a centrifugal motion to the fluid. Carried by that motion, the fluid passes to the turbine, channelling itself between the vanes and setting the turbine turning. Once it has exchanged its energy with the turbine, the fluid falls away and heads towards the stator. The stator changes the direction of the flow in such a way that it gives the pump a further push. That means a more highly pressurised fluid, which in turn pushes harder on the turbine and increases its rotational speed, until it is turning at the same speed as the pump. Pump and turbine rotating at the same speed is the equivalent of the clutch being fully engaged in a manual gearbox. Given the hydraulic nature of the converter, it is difficult for pump and turbine to rotate at exactly the same speed at medium to high road speeds, because of slip. For this reason the control unit engages a lock-up clutch, which mechanically locks pump and turbine together.

The particular nature of the converter is what allows the clutch pedal to be done away with. This comes down to the way the converter itself is built: with the car stationary, the fluid does not have enough energy to turn the turbine at any meaningful speed, so the vehicle can be held still simply by pressing the brake when needed, or by selecting the P position, which mechanically locks the transmission. The fluid simply circulates between the vanes and returns to the pump, without creating the stalling situations typical of a manual gearbox.
There are no synchronisers in an automatic transmission, because the working principle of the gearbox is based on the use of epicyclic gear trains. An epicyclic gear train is a compound gearset made up of the ring gear, with internal teeth; the sun gear, with external teeth, which receives motion from the converter; and the planet gears, which bridge ring and sun and transmit motion through a planet carrier to the output of the gearbox. Depending on which element acts as the fixed member, or reaction member, a different transmission ratio, and therefore a different gear, can be obtained.

An epicyclic gear train of automotive origin.
For reasons of design constraints and packaging, more than one epicyclic gear train has to be used in order to have a range of gears available. To obtain different ratios, multi-plate clutches and band brakes are used to allow or block particular rotations. Take the image below as a reference for understanding the basic operation. Gear by gear, it shows the path the motion takes from the converter to the gearbox output (green line) and the elements that are held stationary (red line).

Operating diagram of an automatic transmission. B1 and B2 are band brakes. C1 and C2 are multi-plate clutches
Let us start with first gear being selected. Here the control unit locks the C1 clutch pack and brake B2. That brake stops the left-hand planet carrier from rotating, so its planet gears are constrained to move only about their own axes. This constraint forces the motion to pass through the planet gears of the right-hand gear train and then to their carrier before leaving the gearbox.
Pictured: automatic transmission, first gear

Second gear is now selected. In this case brake B1 is applied, locking the sun gears. The path taken by the motion is the same, but since the state of motion of some of the components has changed, the transmission ratio has changed with it.
Pictured: automatic transmission, second gear

In this example third gear is direct drive. Both clutch packs are engaged and both brakes released. This makes the whole mechanism rotate at the same input speed coming from the converter, so that the motion transmitted is identical to the one received at the gearbox input.
Pictured: automatic transmission – third gear

Pictured: automatic transmission – reverse

As in the manual gearbox, the automatic also provides a reverse gear.
