Today, we’re behind the wheel of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz for a road test. It’s our first time driving a minivan, and we couldn’t have chosen a better setting to discover the ID. Buzz: a vehicle that blends the vintage charm of the iconic Bulli with the electric mobility of tomorrow.
This is a fresh experience for us, made of space, technology, and a design that never goes unnoticed. The story of the Volkswagen Bulli begins in 1950 with the launch of the T1, a vehicle that revolutionized transportation thanks to its versatility and distinctive design. Originally created as a commercial van, the Bulli quickly evolved into a cultural icon—a symbol of freedom and adventure—loved by families and surfers alike. Today, with the ID. Buzz, Volkswagen brings the Bulli spirit into the modern age, merging retro charm with cutting-edge electric technology. It’s a tribute to the past with its eyes on the future, keeping alive the legacy of a legendary vehicle. The exterior design of the ID. Buzz is a nod to tradition, reinterpreted through a futuristic lens.
One of the most intriguing options is the two-tone paint—an €3,200 extra—that combines Candy White with a stunning Starlight Blue. This elegant contrast highlights the vehicle’s retro-futuristic lines and gives it a unique character that effortlessly draws attention. Let’s be honest: with its friendly front end and rounded forms, it’s also undeniably likable. Completing the look are 20-inch retro-styled wheels—a clear homage to the classic Bulli design, now updated with a modern twist. These details help make the ID. Buzz a true icon on wheels.
Step inside, and the first thing you notice is the sheer spaciousness: the cabin feels huge, and every detail is crafted to maximize comfort and versatility. The expansive glass surfaces wrap around the vehicle, flooding the interior with light and offering a panoramic view that’s simply unmatched. The optional light-colored upholstery enhances the welcoming and airy atmosphere even more. ID. Buzz branding is subtly woven throughout the cabin—on panels, seats, and trim—making the interior playful and full of character.
It’s modern, functional, and lovingly nostalgic all at once. The cabin is also a masterclass in practicality. Storage compartments and USB charging ports are abundant, space is cleverly used, and the double armrests on the front seats ensure a high level of comfort. Our test version comes with five seats, but a six-seat configuration is also available for those needing more flexibility.
On the road, the ID. Buzz surprises with just how smooth and relaxing it is to drive. Under the floor sits a rear-mounted electric motor producing 204 horsepower, paired with a 77 kWh battery—a combination that prioritizes smoothness and ride comfort. The suspension system gracefully absorbs road imperfections, while cabin noise is virtually nonexistent. Despite being 2.2 meters wide, the driving experience is more akin to that of a car, thanks in part to a tight 11-meter turning radius that makes it surprisingly nimble in city traffic.
The 12-inch Discovery Pro touchscreen infotainment system is the technological heart of the cabin. It supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and full connectivity via the dedicated app. A slim LED strip beneath the windshield not only adds ambient flair but also provides useful visual cues for navigation and driving information. Worth noting are the excellent Matrix LED headlights, which deliver powerful and precise illumination even in tough conditions. Meanwhile, the motorized sliding rear side doors add a touch of everyday convenience.
The ID. Buzz supports AC charging up to 11 kW—ideal for overnight top-ups—and DC fast charging up to 170 kW, allowing you to recover 80% of the battery in about 25–30 minutes. The only real downside is highway range, which is affected by a shape that, while charming, isn’t particularly aerodynamic. In winter, at a steady 130 km/h, it’s difficult to exceed 250 km on a single charge—a factor that calls for some planning on longer trips.
With a starting price of €61,000 and our well-equipped test model coming in at nearly €68,000, the ID. Buzz is not a budget option, but it delivers a truly unique experience. A long-wheelbase version is also available, as well as a practical cargo variant tailored for professional needs. We absolutely loved driving this electric van with a vintage heart and a high-tech soul: it’s comfortable, welcoming, and surprisingly full of personality. More than just a means of transport, the ID. Buzz is a travel companion that never fails to make you smile—every time you look at it.
